Siding questions, answered

Which siding material lasts longest?

Lifespan depends on the material, the installation and the climate. Fiber cement is very durable and fire resistant. Vinyl resists rot and needs little maintenance but can crack or warp. Engineered wood performs well when installed and maintained correctly. Installation quality matters as much as the material.

Is vinyl siding a good choice in hot climates?

It can be, with care. Vinyl softens at high temperatures, and dark colors absorb more heat. Lighter colors and heat-resistant formulations help. Watch for reflected sunlight from neighbors' windows, which can warp vinyl.

What's behind the siding, and why does it matter?

A water-resistive barrier and flashing. Siding sheds most rain, but some water always gets behind it. The barrier and flashing direct that water out and protect the sheathing and framing. A replacement is the time to update them.

Is fiber cement siding fire resistant?

Fiber cement is noncombustible and is commonly used where fire resistance matters. If you live in a wildfire-prone area, check local requirements for ignition-resistant materials.

Does engineered wood siding rot?

Engineered wood is treated to resist decay, but it can swell and deteriorate if water soaks in through unsealed edges, damaged paint or poor clearances. Correct installation and maintenance prevent most problems.

Can I install new siding over old siding?

Sometimes, but it's usually better to remove the old siding so the contractor can inspect and repair the sheathing and install a new water-resistive barrier and flashing. Ask what the manufacturer of the new siding allows.

Do I need a permit to replace siding?

Many jurisdictions require a permit for re-siding, particularly when the work involves sheathing, structural repairs or fire-rated assemblies. Ask your contractor or local building department.

How often should siding be painted?

Vinyl doesn't need paint. Prefinished fiber cement and engineered wood come with factory finishes that last many years. Primed products need field painting and periodic repainting depending on sun exposure and paint quality.

How do I clean siding?

Use a garden hose and a soft brush with mild soap. Avoid high-pressure washing, which can force water behind siding or damage finishes.

How do I compare siding quotes?

Compare the product line and thickness, whether old siding is removed, sheathing repair, water-resistive barrier and flashing, trim, finish, permits, cleanup and warranties for product and labor.
